Convert an Excel file to CSV

Andy Boyd, IDM

A common question that comes to us in support is, "How do I create a CSV file from Excel". This isn't so much an UltraEdit question - it's more of an Excel question - but there are a lot of you who are using UltraEdit for CSV files, so this post is for you!

If your file isn't already open, open your "data" file in Excel.

Convert Excel file to CSV

Now, go to the Windows menu (or File menu if you are using pre-2007), select Save As, then Other Formats.

Convert Excel file to CSV

In the Save As dialog, type the name of your file. Now, in the Save As Type dropdown, select "CSV (MS-DOS) (*.CSV)".

Excel will prompt you that 1) CSV files do not support multiple worksheets and 2) that CSV files do not support some features compatible with your workbook. You can click "OK" and "YES" to proceed.

After saving your CSV file in Excel, open it in UltraEdit or UEStudio.

Now that you have a your file, you can use UltraEdit/UEStudio edit the CSV File.

Excel:
Ctrl-A (select all)
Ctrl-C (copy)

UltraEdit:
Ctrl-P (paste)
Ctrl-R (open find/replace box)
find "\t", replace ","

DONE!

Note: You need to have regular expressions turned on (which you always should!)

It worked. Thank you very much. May god bless you. It saved my lot of time. Since our head office has changed format of site, all email addresses saved by me which were upto 500 were deleted. But with your help I could restore them from previous back up of email ides in excel format.

Converting Excel to .CSV

I need to convert an excel into .csv files through a utility where it picks the excel file and outputs the .CSV file. However I want a Pipe (|) delimiter instead of a Comma (,) as there can be a comma in the Cells value.

Also if there is a line feed character in the Cells value that should be replaced with a space.

Thanks in Advance for any help
