What Will UEx Become...

Ian D. Mead,
President

The goal of UEx is to deliver the classic features and functionality of the Windows version of UltraEdit to Linux and Mac community while ensuring we are true to the expectation of providing a native Linux and Mac computing experience.

For instance, consider Primary Selection support; that is copying and pasting via the middle mouse button. One of many standard features that Linux users must have, so UEx supports it. While there are obvious visible features, there are also "under the hood" features that must be supported to ensure that UEx delivers the native Linux experience that users expect, such as file permissions, group/ownership handling, umask support, symbolic link support, etc.

As so many have noted, UEx offers a substantial feature set, superb large file handling, and is in sync with other traditional editors in regards to offering a true Linux computing experience... But, where other editors end, UEx begins. Herein lies UEx's greatest strength: it is subject to IDM's development tempo, our passion for performance, dedication to quality, and commitment to value.

With over 15 years of experience with text and programmers editors, our development staff knows the features you need to simplify your day-to-day work. What's more, we have strived to ensure UEx offers the best performance available. All this to provide you with the combination of the most features, performance, and quality...

As important as features, performance, and quality are, so is value. Besides saving as much as 30% on introductory pricing, you can trust IDM will continue do deliver on the value of 1-year free upgrades. In the near term, users can expect a high development tempo that will deliver on many more powerful features such as:

FTP/SFTP
Support

Telnet/SSH
Support

Tool/Shell
Advancements

Advanced File
System Access

More
Customization

Performance
Gains

FTP SSH/Telnet Tool Tool Performance Performance

For long-term consideration, the intent is to power the Linux/Mac community the same way we have powered the Windows community for the past 15+ years.

Our Linux support staff is up and running, we have full-time, in-house dedicated Linux engineers and support/QA staff taking user requests and making those requests realities today. Your feedback will directly impact future development considerations.

What will UEx become? Simply put, what you and other users desire. Our user driven development model is in play and in full swing. The open channel we have is an example of how we engage our users and seek to understand their needs. Your feedback is invited and we are ready to listen.

I invite you to try UEx today. The introductory pricing is our way of thanking you for your patience and loyalty to UltraEdit. Of course, users can soon expect UltraCompare for Linux (UCx) too as our solution approach to text editing is not bound by platform preference.

Thank you for supporting UltraEdit and our efforts to become your multi-platform solution provider!

-Ian and team

Man, I can't wait to get the Mac-Version. After all these years on Mac, I still miss the UltraEdit.

By the way: The Tab-Index of this Comment-Form is kinda … unhandy.

Can't wait for additional features
Reply #4 on : Tue November 10, 2009, 09:23:45
As part of the beta team I must say UEx has come a long way and it is great to see it available on Linux. I am eager to purchase my license but due to the one year upgrade limitation I will rather wait until critical missing features (like sftp) have been implemented. Thank you IDM for such a great product on Windows and now Linux.

Very cool!! I've been using UltraEdit for 10+ years now, and although I migrated to OS X a couple years ago, I run VMWare specifically so I can run UltraEdit on my Mac. It is klunky though have to use VMWare, so I can hardly wait for a native Mac app!

Great job Ian and team!

+1 for Mac!!
Reply #6 on : Tue November 10, 2009, 11:31:15
I used UE (and UltraCompare) exclusively for all my work for a number of years on Windows and would be very happy to have it available on Mac, which I switched to 3 years ago. I have UE in a Windows VM, but that's just not a workable solution for daily work - don't do windows no more and hate letting it loose on my mac.

Any outlook for Mac availability??!

Long Strange Trip...
Reply #8 on : Wed November 11, 2009, 09:54:31
Ian,

I just realized I've been using UE since v2.x. Thirteen years of love. Now I've switched to Mac and miss my favorite editor. (Wrote a blog entry about it even.) There is just NO substitute for UE! I'm so glad you are going to create a UE for Mac. Even more exciting is that you recognized all the other goodness that can happen as being on the Linux/BSD platform. Thanks for all that you've done to make this old hack happy.

Devin.

Will Mac be part of UEx?
Reply #9 on : Wed November 11, 2009, 10:45:33
I'll ask again (my previous query was never answered): I run UE under Fusion on my Mac. I have no need for UE on Linux. Will the Mac version be just a different install of UEx, or a separate product? The real question: Do I buy UEx now to get the intro price, or wait because if I buy now, I'll have to buy a different product later, when the Mac version is released?

UEX increases value of Win version
Reply #11 on : Wed November 11, 2009, 12:01:05
I don't need UEx at the moment... but I wouldn't have switched to the Windows version had the Mac and Linux versions not been imminent. It's nice to be able use the same tools when you have to switch platforms which has happened a few times in my career.

Multi-platform
Reply #12 on : Wed November 11, 2009, 12:12:16
Just a thought...

I notice that those buying UEx are offered the Win ver for an additional $29. However existing Win users have to pay $39 for the Linux version. I think discount to existing WIn users upgrade to multi-platform would be much appreciated... and sell more copies of UEx.

Disregard my previous post. On spending a few minutes brwsing the Web site, I see that there is a discount for existing users... I had only read the e-mail I received as an existing user...

I'll wait and upgrade to the Win/Linux/Mac version when it's available next year ;-)

Also curious about Mac licensing...
Reply #14 on : Wed November 11, 2009, 17:00:32
I'm not looking for complete details on the upcoming Mac version, but I have the same question as Mike D: will the Mac version be just a different install of UEx or a new and different product? Specifically, if I have a current, up-to-date entitlement to UEx upgrades, will I be able to download and register the Mac version at no additional cost when support for the Mac is released, or will it require an additional purchase? If a UEx license won't include Mac support, will a 'Multi-Platform' license purchased today include the Mac license when Mac support is released?

Mike,

If you are not needing to use the Linux version then I would wait to
purchase until the Mac version is released.

As for determining if the Mac version will be a different install and
product, or part of the same, we are still determining that as there are
pros and cons either way. Once we do know more, we will let you all
know. I would expect that we will offer an intro pricing for the Mac
version when it is released, however it's not known at this time.

Thanks, Ian

Hi

This is great news... Really love UE, have used id for years, but migrated to Mac a year ago and has really missed UE.

Will the Mac-application be built upon a Cocoa interface? And what is the timeline of release?

Hi,
I tested UEx and I'm missing the code higlighting for perl variables. You can highlight all variables in one color but what if you want them in different colors ? Would be neat to have the feature

sftp and umask
Reply #24 on : Sun November 15, 2009, 10:11:25
Hi
other remote edition programs like WinSCP has the feature to set the umask, or permissions on newly created or uploaded files. This is an important feature for us, and I would like to know when ultraedit is going to support that.

It is mentionned in the text from president above, second paragraph, that this is in the roadmap from what I understand, we wont be able to use ultraedit anymore because it lacks this feature .. for now ..

thank you

As a long time Windows user of UE ... 10+ years as well I think (and a lifetime license) ... I have been on a Mac for about 18 months not ... and I am desperately waiting for my editor of choice. Some sort of status update beyond "it's coming" would really be a nice early Christmas for me, or your holiday of choice, present. :)

in my opinion the next step has to be a web application with storing capabilities in services like dropbox.

that would be a really breakthrough.
