UltraEdit for Mac Development Update: 12/09

Ian D. Mead,
President

For those patiently awaiting the Mac version of UltraEdit we have some news.

The bottom line first: We are closer rather than farther away.

You're probably thinking, "OK, when?". Certainly, because the Linux and Mac versions will share the same code base, UltraEdit for Linux paved the way for the Mac build. So we are on it! But, as many of you are developers, you know it's not as simple as build it and run.

In the Windows and Linux development, we approached our Linux version with a specific intent to provide the user with a native Linux computing experience. Indeed, Linux computing is quite different than Windows computing.

As different as Windows and Linux are, the same is true for Mac; thus we will approach the Mac version in much the same way. For Mac, we will pay attention to the user expectations, platform standards, native nuances, etc.

We have built a version of UltraEdit for Mac but it's not there yet. We are dedicated to ensuring that we apply the same standards and commitment to the user experience as we did with our Linux version.

Our Chief Architect, Mike Mills, is heading up the project. Mike is willing to say that the release is sooner rather than later... but I can't give you much more detail at this time.

We hope to share a more detailed update in January - where we may be able to wrangle a screen shot from Mike...or a release expectation. We are very optimistic that those awaiting UltraEdit for Mac will be pleased with what we have to say then.

Perhaps even bigger news is that we are also planning to have Mac counterpart for UltraCompare in 2010.

To be continued in January...

Thank you for trusting IDM as your solution provider. We are excited about the future!

-Ian

I've been a purchaser of the Windows version of UE for some years now and I'm very happy to hear about a Mac version of this product! I've been missing something of this capability on my Mac at home.

I for one would rather the developers took their time and got it right - like they did with the Windows and Linux versions.

Waiting ... patiently...

It's a good way to approach the Mac development. I know that when I first started developing for Mac from the PC world I thought that it would be pretty much the same as developing for X-Windows. Wrong. Even though Mac has a working X client, it is not nearly as good as Cocoa, and Mac users will not stand for it. Also, getting used to the MVC/Objective-C way of doing things can be a challenge for those of use accustomed to the Windows model. Take your time, get it right and I will gladly get the Mac version to complement my 10 years of UE devotion.

That's a good news!

Exactly like Craig "I've been a purchaser of the Windows version of UE for some years now and I'm very happy to hear about a Mac version of this product!"

Indeed I never found a similar product that work so good!

Reply #9 on : Tue December 08, 2009, 10:28:07
Hi,

I have many years of experience in performance and QA testing and would like to be a BETA tester for the MAC products. At the present. I am between projects and have a lot of time on my hands.

Thanks for your consideration

I'll be one of the first in line for it when it releases!!!
That's awesome news! I've been an UltraEdit customer going on 15 years and use it daily and would love to be able to use it on my Mac.

Here's hoping it goes well. If it's anything like the windows version, I'll be thrilled to add it to my mac.

Thanks for the update!

I've been a big user of UE on the PC. UE on the mac should rock--the platform really needs a good text editor.

thanks and keep up the good work.

After using UE for more than a dozen years (with the last few through virtualization) I'll be ecstatic to finally have the native power of UltraEdit on my Mac. Surprisingly, I'm actually more excited about the future release of UltraCompare on OS X. UE-OSX will be a strong leader in the marketplace, but UltraCompare will truly be an oasis in a complete desert of craptastic software like FileMerge.App. I feel like a restless kid on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa to deliver a truckload of Zhu Zhu's.

I currently run my WIN version of ultraedit under mac, on parallels.

Would it be possible trade our WIN license for a OSX one?

I would love to stop using parallels.

Translation -- don't expect UE for Mac until the end of 2010. Sounds like UE isn't putting in the resources needed to get this completed unfortunately. :( Can't even get a screenshot....

This is great news. I recently "switched" from PC to Mac and have been missing UltraEdit. Will there be a transfer or upgrade path for licensed purchasers?

I hope you can provide a free version for registered users of the other editions (Win in my case).

It will be very nice to have such opportunity.

I know UltraEdit since the first versions and I didn't hope that it will be available on OS X. THX a lot! Will there be a beta-Version?

Best wishes for you and your projects!

I confess, I'm an editor snob. I learned to program years ago writing my own text editor. That was back in the day that "edlin" was the state-of-the-art. My editor worked very good. Yet as the years progressed, I kept a file with notes of all the improvements I needed to make to it. This became a very big file of "neat to have features to be added... when I had time" But the reality was that I programed for others for a living and never could keep up with my own desire for editor features.

Then that day came up in my life when I found UE. And the one key feature that caused me to stick with UE was column oriented editing mode. Sweet! UE had all the features that were in my own "to be added" file.

I was married to UE for the years I worked on Windoze systems. The next transformation in my work happened when I left my employer IBM. I was FINISHED with Windoze systems. I know computers very well and I was still overwhelmed with the spam ware nonsense. I did much of my commercial work in unix and I've always been thrilled with the confidence of working in unix. When I sent my ThinkPad back, I told myself I'll never use a Windoze system as my primary flag ship again. I was thinking a linux laptop should be the trick. Yet after all the trials of putting that together, it occurred to me that I couldn't afford to have my primary flag ship machine be a continual development shop. That's when a buddy of mine tipped me off that Apple dumped their toy operating system and have been running BSD unix since the late 90's.

Cool! I bought my first mac sight-unseen having never touched an apple computer. And I've been in love with it ever since. But there was one glaring hole... no Ultra Edit.

Glad to see UE is finally getting to the bright side of computer platforms! We've been looking forward to this day for a long time!

UltraEDit and Accessibility
Reply #22 on : Wed December 09, 2009, 11:57:15
Hi. I am a registered user of UltraEdit for the Windows operating system. I recently purchased a Mac because it has built-in accessibility for blind people through a part of the operating sytem called Voice Over. Please, please make sure that UltraEdit is accessible on the Mac platform!!! Apparently, there is a programming language called Coco and if the program is written in this language, then it will be accessible to those of us who are blind and partially sighted. May God richly bless your Christmas holiday and your work! All the best from Vienna, Austria, Mike Busboom

Cocoa Please?
Reply #26 on : Wed December 09, 2009, 20:10:53
I have been using the Window version of UltraEdit for many years and look forward to a native OS X Mac version. Your comment about the Linux version worries me though. It would seem to indicate that in order to simplify your work a code port between Linux and a Mac X-Windows version is offered. I won't be buying this version. Take your time and use the Cocoa framework instead. Do a proper job - it'll be worth if in the end and provide a worthy competitor to BBEdit.

Ultra Edit Mac
Reply #27 on : Wed December 09, 2009, 23:13:35
This is GREAT news - we really need a quality Editor for Mac. There are quite a few VERY good editors for Mac - but seems like each one is always missing at least one feature that Ultra Edit has. Converting from Windows to Mac has been a very positive experience and am glad every day that we made the changeover here - the ONLY thing not equal to or (mostly) better than a Windows platform is the absence of Ultra Edit! Keep up the good work!

Reply #28 on : Thu December 10, 2009, 04:03:40
I've been a most satisfied user of UE (and UC) on Windows for more than 10 years.
I got a Mac last year and I work (personally/professionally) in both environments, so I miss a Mac version of UE and UC.
I'll certainly buy a Mac version when available and I'm probably (depending on the load at the time) willing to beta-test it if you're looking for testers or early adopters.
