Progress report: UltraEdit for Mac!

Ian D. Mead,
President

Hello Everyone,

Mac

We know that many of you are excited about UltraEdit for Mac and yet frustrated at not knowing when it is going to be available. We understand.

Quite honestly, it has taken us much longer than anticipated. We originally expected - and started - the joint development of UltraEdit for Linux and UltraEdit for Mac together. However, we found that we could not reliably do this, so we opted to complete UltraEdit for Linux first (I know many wish we did it the other way round but that's not the discussion now).

Although UE for Linux and UE for Mac share the same code base, we are still a good way from the Mac version going to beta. We are working on it and it's a very high priority for us.

To realign expectations, we are realistically several months away from the beta/release. We would however anticipate that the Beta would be considerably shorter than that of UltraEdit for Linux. Thank you very much for your continued support and understanding.

We have made the transition from being a Windows only publisher to a bonafide multi-platform publisher. We have added the staff necessary to not only produce multi-platform variants of our products, but also to support them. This is not a small undertaking and we take the investment seriously.

I do apologize for the delay but want to assure you that we will get the Mac version to market as soon as possible and I’ll continue to post updates on a monthly basis.

Sincerely,

Ian and Team.

Thanks for the update. I'm disappointed, but understand delays. I'll check back with IDM late in the year, but I need to make a choice now to learn another editing tool inside-out to increase my programming productivity. i'm choosing one of the Mac-only offerings.

It's better to take your time and get it right than to rush it and put out a crappy project. That said, take your time and hurry it up!! ;-)

Don't worry. We lived so many years without Ultraedit on the Mac, so we'll make it through another few months as well. Just make sure, it's as awesome as the PC-Version.

This is the kind of message that separates good companies from great companies. It is matter-of-fact, appropriately apologetic without being patronizing and keeps everyone informed. I've been a customer of IDM for over 10 years, and it is this kind of professionalism that keep me paying for upgrades every year. My company is making a transition from a .Net-centric development house to a multi-platform (Java and .Net) house. Your experience highlights how we cannot take this transition lightly, even with some great programmers on staff.

Thank you Ian for informing us about the long expected Mac release. Take your time and produce a great Mac version of UE. I would love to also have UltraCompare on the Mac, since I'm really missing a good comparing tool as UC is...

Ian and Team,

Thank you very much for the update. I understand the delay that your team is facing with the Mac version. I will be looking forward to the release in late 10, early 11. Please take your time, your software is great and we would not want a bad version. ;-)

See Ya

Thanks for supporting the mac. I really like my mac and the only thing I really miss from the windows platform is ultraedit. I'm not thrilled with the existing options that exist for the mac.

I can wait - and maybe help

Well done, Ian, in clearly stating your position and anticipated road map.

I have an unlimited-upgrade license on the Windows platform (which I abandoned a couple of years ago in favor of OS X), which I hope to cross-transfer to the Mac (this is probably your first request for this, I imagine), and would be pleased to help you beta test the product when ready.

Thanks,
Mark

UltraEdit for Mac - Can't wait!!!!

I am very happy to hear about the pending release of UltraEdit for Mac. I have been a long time user of UltraEdit on my Windows machines, but after recently becoming a daily Mac user I have lamented not having it at my fingertips. Can't wait to download the Mac version!!!! I second the opinion that this type of message from the company shows a respect for their user community and bolsters the idea that open communication fosters brand loyalty as well as understanding.

Thanks for your honest approach. I'd rather have it late than have it flakey. One feature that I miss on the Mac right now is good handling of very large files (eg massive log files) - I find that TextMate particularly lets me down in this area, but UE on the PC copes fine.

I'm sorry to hear about the delay. I went Mac at the end of last year, and I am eagerly awaiting UE. Like so many people here, I am eagerly awaiting a quality product and I am certain that when it's ready we won't be disappointed.

In the meantime, I've gone over to TextMate, which is about as close to UE as I could get on the Mac.

I use UltraEdit daily.
Reply #15 on : Wed April 07, 2010, 17:58:22
for 2-1/2 years I use the Windows platform UltraEdit software for everything from FTP to coding to spellchecking and it's great. However now I got my first Macbook Pro so the Mac Version will be great when you're ready.

Just a thought crossed my mind; will you create these program also for Google's Chrome OS when it's release to public? In fact I do plan to get the Chrome pc when it's on the market.

Anyway, thanks for the perfect program.

Reply #18 on : Thu April 08, 2010, 05:26:43
as all the others on this post, I'm desperate to have it loaded on my MAC. I own a previous version for Windows and would like to cross-upgrade to MAC-OS or Multi-Platform as I'm using Windows, MAC OS and Linux all together.
In the meantime - while waiting - it would be good to have a plan how this would work and if I could buy that option already now when I upgrade to v16 on Windows (and/or Linux v1.2). When I get it right, many users like cross-platform licenses...

I've been a customer since UE version 3 - that's been about 12 years. You were a one-man shop. It's been a delight to watch you grow. You're doing a great, needed, service for many of us.

I'll be patient for the Mac version. I can move text files between Mac and Windows (like I've been doing with UNIX for a long time).

UltraEdit for OS X
Reply #20 on : Thu April 08, 2010, 09:17:28
The update is much appreciated. There is disappointment in the delay but I would be much more disappointed in getting something less than an application that is true and faithful to the OS X philosophy of UI and functionality. As such, I commend you and your team(s) in making the tough decision to delay rather than rush something Mac users will disregard as "just another crappy port". I look forward to further updates on progress. Oh, and a few screen captures wouldn't hurt either! :-)

I was a long-time user of UltraEdit back when I used Windows, but unfortunately since moving to the Mac in 2003 I have had to go without UltraEdit (and opted for BBEdit in its place). I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the Mac version looks when it's released!

Have any of you tried to use Text Wrangler or some of the other crap that is out there for Mac text editing?

I am almost entirely Mac and there is no good text editor out there. At least not one that I like.
It's funny how we Mac users pay a premium for our computing platform of choice because of superior... everything.

Unfortunately, developers who claim Mac software as a priority still seem to end up treating Mac development as a second tier objective. "The Mac version will be released shortly after the Windows version."

BAH! Humbug!

I really liked UE when I was running Windows. But I have not been able to use it for several years now.
I might as well just forget about getting it for Mac because if the opportunity comes around to develop for some other platform, say the Atari, I'm sure you guys will choose to do that before the Mac version.

Thanks for working on this, not having UE anymore was a real disappointment when I went to Mac. I look forward to having it back.

Also, have you guys thought about building some eclipse plugins. I would love to have the features of UE in my eclipse dev environment.

Some questions
Reply #24 on : Thu April 08, 2010, 12:21:02
Hi Ian,
Thanks for the update. I am eagerly waiting the Beta release. But, I had just a couple of questions:
1, Are you planning on a Universal Binary (PPC & x86)?
2. Will there be a 64-bit version?
3. How far back are you planning for OS versions? 10.0+, 10.4+, 10.5+??

Thanks for some great work!

Thank you for the update. I'm very excited about the prospect of UltraEdit for my Mac, but as a fellow developer, I can totally understand that sometimes things turn out to be harder than anticipated.

As a Windows user who happens to have a MAC rather than being a true MAC fangrrl, I'm hoping that it won't be too "mac-ish". Of course, I also realize that mine is probably very much a minority opinion.

Keep up the great work. Given IDM's history of excellence, I'm absolutely positive UE for MAC will be full of win.
