UEX - UltraEdit for Linux Development Update, May 7 2009

Ian D. Mead,
President

June 29 2009 update: Please see our latest update on UEX.

Hello Everyone,

Just a small note to let everyone know where we are with UEX....Alpha testing has gone very well! We have made much progress across the board.

As planned, we will be moving to Beta I next week. Our plans are to stage the release over a period of weeks and gradually expand the beta audience each week with the introduction of fresh builds.

By doing a staged Beta, we can better respond to the feedback and correct issues more efficiently. This will also allow us to deliver better builds to new participants with each subsequent release.

Beta I is primarily a discovery period for UEX, here we will be in harvest mode for beta feedback. We plan on being in Beta I for about 3-4 weeks. Once we transition to Beta II, we will begin a more co-development process and respond directly to the beta tester regarding any issues found or enhancement requests they desire.

Our release intentions during Beta I and II is to release a new UEX distribution that incorporates the latest features and fixes every 7-14 days.

Beta III will conclude the beta cycle and is meant to polish all known issues from Beta I and II. If all goes as planned, Beta III should conclude in July and result in the commercial release of UEX during August/September.

Yes we are just a few months from commercial release and very excited about the event.

Of course we have more to show; check out the links below to see UEX in action.

  UEX Overview

  Find and Replace

  Syntax Highlighting and Code Folding

Auotmate Your Tasks with Macros and Scripts

Organize Files and Folders with Projects

Configure UEX to Meet Your Needs

For those who have requested to participate in the UEX beta program, please expect more information - in your inbox - soon.

If you have not signed up for our UEX beta program and would like to participate, please email us at idm@idmcomp.com.

One last note, we believe that realistically, UEX for Mac OSX will be about a calendar quarter behind UEX for Linux. It will be there however!

Our best is yet to come,

-Ian and team.

Does the August/Septembre release include the MacOS version? Or is that one delayed?

... never mind ... to answer my own question: MacOS version by the end of the year.

In my excuse, I haven't had a coffee yet.

I have not upgraded my Windows version, that I used to update yearly, because I make the switch to Ubuntu a few years ago. I have sorely missed UE. There are substitutes, but not replacements.

Will there be a Studio for Linux/Mac in the future? When?

I sure hope the extra quarter of waiting brings us a proper OS X implementation instead of a mere port ;)
I am primarily thinking of the UI, it ought to be a proper COCOA UI, not some messy X11...

I have been an IDM customer for years. I own lifetime licenses for UEStudio, UltraCompare, and UltraSentry. I look forward to owning a liftime license for UEX. Beta testing here we come!

I have been an UltraEdit user for years now and absolutely love it! I've also been a Mac user for years now and equally love that. I've been using a virtual machine solution on my Mac solely for the use of UltraEdit, for quite some time now. When I found out you were going to release an UltraEdit version for Mac (UEX) - I was ecstatic. I am so very excited and cannot wait for the release of UEX. Can you please put me on an email list so I can get notified the soonest I can begin using UEX? I will be purchasing it the moment it's available - it's worth every penny!

Worst part, now I don't have UE to blame for my staying with Windows ;-)

Wish I could remember when I whined at Ian the first time about unix support. Long time ago. Anyway, it's been quite an interesting process watching UE grow.

In a former lifetime, I edited virtually all my VMS kernel contributions in UE on a Windows workstation. During debug I would do small edits in the VMS native editor (EDT with extensions was what I used), but for extensive development projects, I used UE, enjoying the extensive project organizing capabilities as well as the great multi-document editing, including scroll sync, ultra-compare, invoking builds and scripts from within the editor, etc.

Since I've become I Linux weenie, I've learned to live with vi, vim, gvim, and cscope, and, indeed, much of the functionality is there, if you're willing to build a large enough .vimrc file. But I very much look forward to making far better and efficient use of my time with UEX. I know I'm exposing myself to flames from committed vi afficionados, but UE is home territory for me.

Guys,
With all due respect to you and your wonderful product... Several promotional e-mails a week is WAY TOO MUCH. I have indeed subscribed to your product update notifications, but everything is good to a resonable limit.

Hi, I'm really hopeful that I can buy UltraEdit for Linux. Though, please make it distro-independent. Just tell me which libraries are required. I think that will expose UltraEdit to a wider audience. (I use Slackware, btw).

I'm having to use TextMate on the Mac at the moment and it's rubbish! I can't wait until you get UltraEdit released on the Mac. Please can you give us another status update for how things are progressing. Thanks.

Second this - recent updates to VirtualBox for whatever reason make UES almost completely unusable so hoping UEX is coming soon.
