UEX - UltraEdit for Linux Development Update, August 2009

Ian D. Mead,
President

Hello again. It is with great excitement that we present this month's update on UltraEdit for Linux (UEx).

So much has happened in the past 30 days in terms of product advancement and internal preparations for commercial release.

On the release front, we have rounded out a significant portion of our UEx website content. Click the icons below to see UEx on Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, and Red Hat.

UltraEdit for Ubuntu UltraEdit for Fedora UltraEdit for OpenSUSE UltraEdit for Red Hat
(Besides accommodating these four main distributions, we've also published a .tar for those using other 32-/64-bit distributions.)

On the development side of the house, we released a Beta II refresh on Monday, August 3. This released retired a material amount of issues, introduced new functionality, and positioned our development teams focus upon Beta III which was released Tuesday, August 11.

New in Beta III (in addition to the maintenance installment):

  • Tabs to Spaces
  • Spaces to Tabs (All)
  • Spaces to Tabs (Leading)
  • Trim Trailing Spaces
  • To Upper Case
  • To Lower Case
  • Capitalize
  • Invert Case
  • Added Bash to default wordfile
  • Move Line Up/Down
  • Duplicate Line
  • Show Tabs/Spaces
  • Show Line Endings
  • Show Page Breaks
  • Templates
  • Template List
  • File Change Detection

And there is some menu re-mapping in place, including:

  • Moved Word Wrap to the View menu
  • Renamed Menu "Advanced" to "Tools"
  • Moved Configuration to Edit menu and renamed to "Preferences"

Before going to a Release Candidate (RC), we are planning a Beta III refresh later in August to introduce some final features and another maintenance installment.

We want to publicly thank those participating in the UEx beta program. Your feedback and support have been instrumental and there is no way we could bring UltraEdit to the Linux community without your help.

As so many of you have asked, we will be publishing the pricing of UEx soon and YES, existing UltraEdit and UEStudio users will receive customer loyalty discounts.

We are also very proud of our Linux code team for making UEx a reality. In particular, we would like to highlight Brad Hawkins for leading the Linux group and relentlessly pursuing its release.

Also of particular note are the contributions of Mike Mills, IDM's Chief Architect, and Troy Pennington, IDM’s Chief QA.

To our user community, thanks for trusting IDM as your solution provider (No matter what platform you prefer). We are honored to serve you.

-Ian and Team

Will there be any kind of a discount for those with quite old versions of UE? I really liked it, but changed over to Ubuntu a few years ago and couldn't run it anymore, so I never upgraded.

Do you have a milestone date for a Mac beta? I can't wait to run UE without my VM hogging memory all day every day. After more than a dozen years of UltraEdit, there's no way I'd switch BBEdit or TextMate.

May I ask: what user interface toolkit did you decide to use for UEX ?

Thanks,

I'm a customer for your bunddle (UE,UC,US) on windows. But I work since 2 years on Mac OS, and I'm ready to try UE on Mac OS.
I'm developper of Web sites, so if you need more beta tester, it's ok for me.

Joseph,

Thank you for your question regarding the availability of the UltraEdit for
Mac.

We are absolutely going to release a Mac version of UltraEdit and that beta
will be forthcoming in the coming months.

We are very excited about providing this. The time frame for this is
relatively soon but for those waiting we understand your anticipation.

We had originally anticipated making both Linux and Mac versions available
at the same time, however we found it necessary to focus on one platform at
a time to ensure a smooth and quality release for each. This has led us
to a sequential release strategy and the Mac version will follow the Linux
version.

We understand how this delay may frustrate you and other Mac users. I can
assure you (and all other Mac users) IDM is focused on doing the Mac version
right and providing that community the same level of attention and
dedication we provide our user community at large.

The Mac version is well underway. We will provide greater detail in up
coming newsletters as we will have a clearer picture of its roll out.

Thanks for your question and trusting IDM as your solution provider. We are
excited to be expanding into the Linux and Mac communities and are grateful
for the opportunity.

Ian, Silly Question? UEX Studio?
Reply #11 on : Tue August 18, 2009, 03:34:55
Being a long time Ultraedit client, I am now considering upgrading to UEStudio.
My problem, however, is supporting both a Windows (XP/Vista/Win-7) client base, as well as (Centos/Redhat) Linux.
Do you have any plans for a UEStudio version of UEX?
Also, what about dual platform bundles?
It would be nice to have a dual platform license (combination) in one transaction, rather than having to buy each platform separately.
Also, for those guys & gal's who need to support MAC OS-X, maybe include a three pack combo?
What's your thoughts and/or plans on this?

Cross-platform switch

Ultraedit was one of the reasons that kept me away to switch to a Mac, so I am waiting for UEX with a lot of impatience :)

I am sure that, as usual, you will make your customers happy and so I am looking forward for the next UEX release!

Thanks!
