UEx - UltraEdit for Linux Development Update, September 2009

Ian D. Mead,
President

Hello again!

It is with great excitement that we present this month's update on UltraEdit for Linux (UEx). UEx is within about 30 days of release and we are very excited about the upcoming event.

UEx IconA lot has happened in the past month and so much of the credit belongs to the beta group. Our development, testing, and packaging is a direct reflection of the continuous feedback from hundreds of beta testers. Many of those currently using Beta III are actually using UEx as their daily editor on Linux. Again, our thanks to the beta team!

The Beta III refresh was of particular significance as it addressed over a hundred items that ranged from minor cosmetic improvements to major Find/Find in Files advancements to the introduction of many new features to include the Function List.

Because some work remains in Find/FIF and the new Function List, we released a Beta IV on Sept 4th and anticipate the commerical release (RC1) later this month. Indeed, UEx is robust in features and functionality and underpinned with a passion for performance. With the commercial release expected within about 30 days, our countdown is now driven by our insistence of exceeding our own performance and quality standards. We think you will find the wait worth while

Click here for more about UEx features and supported distributions.

Of high interest to our beta testers and fellow bloggers is the topic of UEx pricing. As many know, UltraEdit is largely considered the most powerful, value priced text editor on the market. The reason is simple, we have a pricing doctrine at IDM that is centered on affordability.

We price our products so that anyone needing a text editor or file management solution can afford the best there is. UEx is no exception. Although some Linux editors are priced as much a $300, UltraEdit for Linux will be introduced at $49.95.

As important as pricing is – quality and support are of equal importance to us.

Of course, any paid registration of any IDM product includes 1-year of complimentary upgrades. Here again, UEx is no exception. Those who purchase UEx can count on the same frequent updates and material new feature deliveries. In fact, we anticipate a more rapid on-going delivery of updates over the first few months as we continue to add to and refine UEx. Besides our doctrine of pricing, we also believe in delivering on the value of 1-year of free upgrades.

For those who have emailed, blogged, and posted pricing questions in our forums, here is the news you have been patiently waiting for.

Yes, existing users of UltraEdit and UEStudio will be afforded special pricing...20% off the already discounted introductory price to be exact! It gives us much pleasure to provide our loyal users this consideration as a token of our appreciation for your continued support and loyalty over the past 15 years.

Expect to see these links live on our site very soon!

For those that have an UltraEdit or UEStudio Unlimited Lifetime Upgrade license, we are also offering you a special opportunity to purchase a matching UEx license.

Lastly, for those using UltraEdit and want to upgrade their Windows license as well as acquire a Linux license, we are offering an UltraEdit Multi-Platform Upgrade license. This will not only provide you fresh versions for both platforms, but will align both free upgrade periods as well.

For those patiently awaiting the Mac version of UltraEdit please let me assure you that we are focused on this and expect the release to shortly follow the Linux release.

For all in the IDM user community, thank you for your outstanding support. We are thrilled to be approaching commercial release of UEx and are reminded of the honor it is to be trusted as the preferred solution used by millions.

No matter what your favored platform is, our goal is to provide you unsurpassed quality, performance and value!

-Ian and Team

Want Mac; Buy UEx?
Reply #2 on : Wed September 09, 2009, 09:27:12
I own UE, I use a Mac. Do I need to buy UEx now/soon to get the initial discount? Or will UE/Mac be a separate product? Or will the initial price still be good when UEx/Mac is released? Or...

Multi-platform - Unlimited Lifetime Upgrade Option
Reply #5 on : Wed September 09, 2009, 22:57:59
I already have an Unlimited Lifetime License for UE (Win). Sure would be nice to be able to convert that to an Unlimited Lifetime Upgrade License for Multiplatform (or "Universal", when the MAC version finally arrives...)

As a Mac user, part of me is miffed that Linux came first, but as an old hand Linux user, I know that an editor of the caliber of UE is sorely needed on Linux. At least on the Mac we have Textwrangler (free) and its big brother BBEdit (pay) to tide us over.

I'm already a UE Win Lifetime subscriber... pretty much no longer run Linux. But I'm very much looking forward to the Mac Version.

70 USD for the retail version is higher than the price of UE for Windows. Get real, folks.

About UEx for Mac...
Reply #10 on : Fri September 11, 2009, 09:54:05
Thanks for the sharing of thoughts and perspectives. We do appreciate
the excitement over UEx and fully expect to release UltraEdit for Mac in
the near-term. As most following this blog know, UEx was not a simple
port from Windows to Linux.

UEx is UltraEdit re-engineered for Linux. We took our 15+ years of
knowhow and text editing expertise and went after building the Linux
equivalent of UltraEdit. In numerous circumstances, UEx is actually
more powerful and advanced than its Windows counterpart.

Yes, UltraEdit for Mac is of equal importance and we have approached
this in the same manner.

Thank you Rick for your kind comment, "…I know that an editor of the
caliber of UE is sorely needed on Linux." Your word choice says it
all. We are systematically entering the Linux and Mac communities with
the full intent of delivering on the performance and functionality the
UltraEdit brand stands for. Once there, users of either platform will
enjoy what our Windows community has today: our full attention and
understanding of the dynamic computing challenges users face and the
timely provision of powerful solutions for them.

IDM is a company that is comprised of programmers that make software for
programmers. We share a passion for text editing and programming with
our user community and the capstone of this relationship is our user
driven development model. Bringing this dynamic into the Linux and Mac
communities is hugely exciting for us and a big responsibility that we
take seriously.

We also have a passion for supporting our users and exceeding their
expectations. To us, the arrival of UltraEdit to the Linux and Mac
communities is about providing our users the ability to leverage the
power and functionality of UltraEdit regardless of platform.

We are as fired up as you are about UEx and we are so thankful to have
your support.

Thanks, Ian

Me, too!

I've been using BBEdit on the Mac. Works ok, but why does it take so long to launch? I have a habit of closing windows when I'm done. It'll be nice to use the same editor on multiple platforms and I hope UE loads faster than BBEedit. Either way, the days with BBEedit are numbered!

What about unlimited upgrades?
Reply #12 on : Thu September 17, 2009, 11:52:16
It's good to know that UE is finally going to Linux. However I hope that it would be possible to 'change' between versions for little or no extra charge. You see, I am the proud owner of an Unlimited license for UE and hated the fact that I could not take the program with me on an USB stick. When UE portable arrived I bought an lifetime license for the USB-version; so I'm not using the 'normal' UE anymore. And I think it would be fair to let me transfer the 'normal' UE license to Linux.

It's not that I earn loads of money with UE, I just use it for building a few websites for personal use. But I bought the unlimited updates because I like to support a good product and I don't want to renew the license every year.

But I guess I have to keep running UE under Wine. Not a perfect solution, but it works...

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for your comment. UltraEdit has had 64-bit file handling for files for some time now, irrespective of platform.

Thanks,
