UEX - UltraEdit for Linux - Development Update

The world's favored windows editor will soon be available for Linux/Mac
Co-Written by Richard Knott and Ian D. Mead

Few programs within the scope of text/programmers editors offer the functionality UltraEdit does, so the goal of UEX (UltraEdit for Linux) is to offer the sum of UltraEdit's legendary functionality to the Linux and Mac user communities - because a total solution should not be bound by OS.

UEX: UltraEdit for Linux

If you're a Windows user who has made the jump to Linux/Mac, UEX will seem very familiar. UEX uses all the standard (UltraEdit) hot keys that you've come to know (Ctrl-C to copy text, Ctrl-P to print, etc.)...

Perhaps two of the most popular hallmarks of UltraEdit are its extensive feature set and its famed configurability. Of course, both of these attributes are preserved in UEX so users can enjoy the things they liked most about UltraEdit, while at the same time, leveraging its strength against computing tasks on Linux/Mac platforms.

If you're exchanging text files between a Windows or Mac OS, you'll find UEX's built-in file-type converter very handy. Of course, as you know, In different operating systems line terminators are encoded differently. If you open a text file created in Linux in a Windows editor, you may see that the editor runs all the lines together. UEX's file-type converter internally handles the line endings so you can view the file as you expect to see it - you can convert the file permanently or leave it in its native format. Because UEX handles these formats automatically, you and your co-workers can switch effortlessly between Unix, Mac, and Windows text formats.

UltraEdit is heralded by the Windows community as the ideal text, HTML, HEX editor, advanced PHP, Perl, Java and JavaScript editor for programmers. We think delivering anything short of this to our Linux/Mac users would be a disappointment. As such, we didn't simply port UltraEdit (Windows) to Linux, rather we re-engineered the critical components to take advantage of the native Linux and Mac operating systems - all this to give you the superior performance that UltraEdit is known for - on your operating system of choice.

Of course, for those of you who have become accustomed to UltraEdit on Windows, UltraEdit's legendary edit control has been re-engineered to run on Linux/OS X. The file handling and superior performance unique to UltraEdit (Windows) is the backbone of UEX thus giving you the superior performance you expect. Besides the core of the editor, we have ported the essential features needed for users of all types: Cut, Copy, Paste, Find, Replace, Undo, Redo, Print, Projects, Macros, Scripting, code folding, workspace/file manager, output window, project support, syntax highlighting, column/HEX editing, and so on...

Like its Windows counterpart, you can use UEX for anything you want, text editing, web development, application/software development, technical writing, system administration, and so on...

VI, VIM, Emacs

Configure UEX to perform an array of specialized tasks, or simply use it a general text editor. Load a 4GB+ file and data mine with all the might of our Find/Find-in-Files (FIF) and of course Replace/Replace-in-Files. Need a quick spell check before publishing your files, then run the integrated spell-checker... UEX is built with the single user in mind as well as the needs of a complete enterprise deployment.

As you know, many Linux editors won't run unless you install specific libraries, files, and other dependencies. Having specialized in text editing perfection for better than 15 years, we understand that installing and using specific libraries can be cumbersome and time-consuming. As such, we have taken the steps to make the installation of UltraEdit for Linux as seamless as possible without the need for hunting down dependencies. To these ends, we plan on providing distribution specific packages for a seamless installation experience.

While we have done so much to date, and many are anticipating the nearing release, we are not done yet!

OSs

The initial distribution of UltraEdit for Linux will be based on the Ubuntu platform. For Red Hat/Fedora, OpenSuse, Debian, and other Linux distribution users, a tarball will be provided so all can enjoy the editor.

Future steps will include the addition of a collection of IT tools such as integrated Telnet/SSH client, FTP/SFTP browser, and SQL/MySQL admin tools. Like its Windows counterpart, UEX will not be just a text editor, it will offer a total text editing solution...

And of course, our model for pricing has not changed. Affordability has always been a design requirement of any IDM product. The same will be true for UEX. There are few commercially available editors for Linux/Mac and the ones that offer any appreciable advanced functionality are very expensive. UEX will not follow this model.

Like it's Windows counterpart, UEX will be highly affordable, come with 1-year free upgrades, lifetime tech support, and will be maintained by our in-house dedicated engineering division so users can expect regular updates and new versions to keep pace with the ever changing technological landscape.

Look for updates here in IDM Highlights each month and expect UEX's commercial release VERY soon.

On behalf of our dedicated UEX team, it's our hope that you are as excited about UEX as we are.

I can't wait to try it on my OpenSuse platform. UtraEdit is the best editor available! I use it daily at my work. I hope the column mode of UEX works as great as the windows UltraEdit version. That would make Kate disappear from my system!

Keep up the great work guys!
(Total Commander & UltraEdit ... what more do you need? ;) )

Unbelievable! I have been an UltraEdit user since v7.0 but a couple of years ago left the windows world behind for Ubuntu. Yes I've used Wine to run UE but it's buggy and resource intensive so I ended up on jEdit. This would be a dream come true...when?!? WHEN?!? Must .....have....argghggh...

How much wil it cost and when can I beta test it ?
Reply #4 on : Tue March 10, 2009, 09:23:45
For me, this is the best news, since I discovered Java and got away from memory management hell!

Myself and another developer in this shop are diehard UE users who are currently doing development under Ubuntu. We would love to get our hands on a beta (we will definitely give feedback, even on an Alpha test!)

Please decide on a pricing model as soon as possible and publish that!

And please let me know how we can become beta testers!

thank you,
-Jim M.

I am a VERY long time user of UE. In the last year I made the jump to Ubuntu and will never go back.

However, I really missed UE. I never thought that you guys would make the jump. I KNOW this was a very expensive project.

I also have become a Rudy/Rails programmers and really want the "textmate" type of functionality available in an editor.

So were do I sign up.... More than happy to send money.

In HIS NAME.... God Bless...

I've also switched to OSX, and really want to cut off my vmware fusion window. UltraEdit is one of the reason that I cannot....
I'm really to buy as soon as it's out. Hopefully soon.

Good to hear you're finally listening to your customers.
I also wanted UE for Linux when i switched over some 11 years ago.
Alas, now i've gotten so accustomed to the strength of VI that i am not sure UEX has come too late.

But for people switching only now, i can see it really makes sense to use UEX, and i'd surely would recommend it.

I too have switched to Linux and UE is the app I miss most. I've tried many Linux editors, none comes close to UE.

It sounds like the FTP/SFTP capability won't be available in the first release, is that correct?

Will there be a beta program? If so, how can I get involved?

Thanks much for this.

UE is currently the only reason why I have still have a Windows installation. Will I have to buy the Linux version separatly, or will my lifetime purchase of the windows version include the linux version?

Hi, this is great news! How would I sign-up to alpha testing program? I've been using UE for win for many years, it would be wonderful to have it on unix as well!
Thank you for great work!

This is great, UE is one of the few applications I rely on that is keeping me on Windows. It will be nice to run it natively in Linux!

Great job Ian and Richard, thank-you!

Thanks, it takes a lot of guts to be a pioneer but I think you're just the first among many organizations who will bring their product from Windows only to Linux/Ubuntu and Mac. Your screen shots look good, I'm eager to try it. (I'm an Ubuntu user who hasn't yet found the perfect editor)

I'm so glad you've decided to do this, as I've been using Linux more and more (and it doesn't quite work as well in wine as I'd like for it to).

I'm also on the unlimited upgrades plan, and await an FAQ about cross-platform information about said upgrades (I've not read too deeply in the UEX page).

Again, thank you guys so much. UE was one of the few programs I missed from the Windows world.

Unlimited Upgrades
Reply #25 on : Wed March 11, 2009, 11:03:06
UltraEdit and UltraCompare have been the two main reasons I still develop on Windows. This could finally allow me to make the transition to Linux.

I too have the unlimited upgrades for UE on Windows. That was one of the big selling points. Even if UEX is not covered by my current unlimited upgrades license, I hope there is an unlimited upgrades option for UEX.

As a long-time UE user, this is excellent news. Last year purchased a MacBook. It's a stunning device, but it SERIOUSLY lacks a decent programmer's editor. If UEX performs even close to as well as UE for Windows, this will be a Godsend.

Can't wait!

I'd love to help with the Beta.....

Beta Testers needed?
Reply #29 on : Wed March 11, 2009, 11:41:46
Like nearly all the other posters, I've made the jump to Linux (currently Ubuntu).
A long-time Fan and User of UltraEdit (since version 6!!), it is the one thing I miss most about the move, and is part of the reason why one of my PCs is still running windows.

We've waited a long time for this and so all I can say is Thank You!.

Do you need Beta Testers?

I have been writing code on windows with ultraedit for more than 9 years. It will be awesome to be able to edit files on my Macs or Linux boxes.

Great work.
