UEx: The Wait is Almost Over....

Ian D. Mead,
President

This month's UEX update is short, sweet, and to the point!

UEX

Announcing the scheduled commercial release of UEx: Oct 23 - Oct 30 (based on RC feedback)

That's right, mark your calendars. The wait ends in just a few weeks!

As we have said before, UEx is not simply a (Windows) port to Linux, but rather a re-engineering of UltraEdit for Linux. The goal of UEx is to deliver the classic features and functionality - as in the Windows version of UltraEdit - to the Linux and Mac community while ensuring we are true to the expectation of providing a native Linux and Mac computing experience. We took this goal very seriously.

For instance, consider Primary Selection support; that is copying and pasting via the middle mouse button. One of many standard features that Linux users must have, so UEx supports it. The same is true about other features and functionality unique to UEx such as the CTRL+mouse-drag to activate column mode editing.

While there are obvious visible features, there are also "under the hood" features that must be supported to ensure that UEx delivers the native Linux experience that users expect, such as file permissions, group/ownership handling, umask support, symbolic link support, etc.

We are there! The wait is over! Our release date is now scheduled for 23 October 2009. We will be releasing a final beta refresh later this week and RC1 after that as the last steps of our QA process.

Our Linux support staff is up and running, we have full-time, in-house dedicated Linux engineers and support/QA staff taking user requests and making those requests realities today.

Look for a dedicated IDM Highlights later this month that announces the official release of UEx, download and purchase options, and a very exciting development roadmap announcement.

Thanks for your support of IDM and our efforts to become your multi-platform solution provider.

-Ian and team

Mr Mead, any chance of getting a current testing/beta version of UEX?

I would really like to have a play.
I'll even pay for it in advance, if you can do a bundle for UltraEdit & the Release version of UEX.
I think the UltraEdit I have been getting is the Annual Subscription version.
A UEX & UltraEdit version of that is what I assume I would get?
please...?

Great News!

As a user of UltraEdit since 1995 I'm really happy to see this finally come to pass. It is the only reason that I am continuing to use Windows on my primary computer. Finally I'll be able to switch it totally to Linux and have WIndows only as a dual boot on one machine for those few times when I must use Internet Explorer or reference something in it to help a client.

Congratulations, IDM. I'll be among the first in line on or after the 23rd.

If this is the beta/RC candidate version, I can't wait for the real thing.

Although I seem to have found a few quirks, that I haven't yet confirmed as in the list.
However, being a long time Linux user, I need to confirm that they aren't (my) platform related.
I will have a play, then get back to you over the next week.

Mr Mead, I am so very, seriously, impressed, very well done!
Thank's also to your wonderful people.

If I may, I would also suggest, based only on what little I have seen, if it's not ready to ship, by the release date, please just let us all know.
This is one product that is seriously worth waiting for.

Licensing
Reply #5 on : Wed October 07, 2009, 17:35:59
We have many UE users and a few also use Linux on occasion. They are interested in using UEx in addition to UE. How will the licensing work? Will we need to buy a license for each of them or will we be able to buy, say, two concurrent licenses? Or will the UE licenses be good enough?

And the Earth is an oblate spheroid. :-)

Tired of using UltraEdit in VMware Fusion
Reply #7 on : Fri October 09, 2009, 15:27:22
Can't wait to get UltraEdit for the Mac!

I'm tired of flipping into VMware Fusion on the Mac to use UltraEdit. There is a keystroke issue in Snow Leopard when flipping between screens in Spaces so that I do a Ctrl-F for a find and the letter f gets typed into my code. After an escape, then the find works fine. But annoying.

UEX *NOT* out yet.
Reply #19 on : Mon November 02, 2009, 09:12:37
Every page I've attempted to download UEX from just gives the teaser message about not being released yet.

I think it's cheesy to put out a non-working Downloads page (http://www.ultraedit.comdownloads/uex.html), complete with a "Download" button and dropdown boxes to select the distro and the version.

Any updates about when UEX will be released? If not, then I suggest taking down the download page, or at least removing the drop down boxes and Download buttons.

"That's right, mark your calendars. The wait ends in just a few weeks!"

I don't have a pen big enough.

Most companies don't
a) miss a posted release date range without making some sort of update
b) put up a fake download page

You said Oct 23-30, based on RC feedback. Its Nov. 3 now and no news? I guess we have to assume that the RC did not go well at all...

Where's an update on dev/release state?
Reply #21 on : Tue November 03, 2009, 02:04:38
I understand that software development isn't alway forseeable but making an announcement that UEX will be available latest by Oct 30 and then - after this date is passed for nearly a week - I'd expect some information about WHAT is going on, WHY is there no release yet and WHEN the release is now scheduled for.

A short "Hey folks, feedback of RC1 was overwhelming but there are some things we want to iron out before releasing a stable" would be the thing I expected.

Wouldn't that actually be professional?

Just my two cents...

It may also be worthwhile not to use the word "released" in conjunction with a Release Candidate that is obviously *not* released. Would have spared me some clicking and browsing. Just tell us we will have to wait for a couple more weeks. We have waited rather long for UE to come to Linux, we will survive the extended wait. Still, giving a reasonable guess on the rough timeframe would be great.

Hello Folks,

Thanks for your blog posts. Sorry for the lack of communication regarding the latest status of UEx. We understand that this has caused some frustration. Please be sure we have been very busy working on bringing this to you.

Below is a brief update on the status of UEx:

Release Candidate 1 was published to our beta group last week and it's been very well received. Out of the 1000+ users that are testing RC1, we have only received a handful of new issues and we expect to commercially release UEx within the next 10 days.

As for the website download pages... We have published these pages in advance for search engine indexing purposes. Although the pages are marked with "Coming soon" and have no links to the downloads themselves, we are positioning UEx to be easily found once released.

Thank you again for your post and sharing your frustrations. We are excited about the release and appreciate your community support tremendously.

Thanks,

Ian and Team

P.S. I know that many are anxiously awaiting more news on UEx for Mac. We will give you an update on this in the next few weeks. Sorry that we don't have more for you at this time.

Ok, I'm a bit overstating this but UE on Linux !!! Incredible! I was waiting this for so long that I can hardly believe what I'm seeing. I hope you'll have a good success with it, and sure you can count on me to take a double lifetime license!!! Long life to UEX!

C'mon, people, cut them some slack.

This is a first-ever release, not an update, neither is it exactly a port. It's a major league NEW app, probably among the most sophisticated apps that have run in X.

I am sure we won't regret the wait, neither will we regret the small disappointment of waiting a little longer after we've waited this long. Meanwhile, it's vim, gvim, and cscope for me, and probably emacs for a lot of you.

We wouldn't be anxious and excited about UEx if those other tools had all the stuff we need.
