CHINESE CHARACTERS

Postby cuvetto » Sun Jan 06, 2013 5:50 am

I wanted to edit a word in a file that is displayed in Chinese, but opening the file I can not see Chinese characters and if you paste a Chinese character to look for him, he tells me it can not find.
Is there a way (settings) to display Chinese characters with this program and then edit them at will??

Well, I suppose the text file is encoded as Unicode text file or uses a special Chinese character encoding. UltraEdit usually detects the encoding. In status bar at bottom of the UltraEdit window the detected encoding is indicated with U- for UTF-16 LE, U8- for UTF-8, UBE- for UTF-16 BE and UESC- for ASCII Escaped Unicode.

But you have to select at View - Set Font for normal text editing or View - Set HEX/Column Mode Font for column and hex editing a font which contains also glyphs for all characters in the file to get the characters correct displayed.

If the file is not encoded in Unicode and auto-detection of code pages is disabled or failed to detect the right code page, it is necessary to use View - Set Code Page for the active file and select the right script (code page) in the font selection dialog among an appropriate font to get the characters correct displayed.

Ok, thanks a lot, now I see Chinese characters on my right ..... I'm missing a last step, if i wanted to search for a character by pressing the "search", just paste the Chinese letter in the search box, I can see it, but if I press "find" the program looks for and finds me the interrogative point. Why does this happen and how do I let it look at the chinese character that I want to find??

I can't answer your second question regarding searching for Chinese characters as I do not have any experience here and I do not have any file with Chinese data to try such a search by myself. I'm using English UltraEdit on German/English Windows and have even disabled support for East Asian languages in the Windows regional and language settings. I'm quite sure searching for Chinese characters should not be a problem as without that the Chinese versions of UltraEdit would not make much sense.

Is a Chinese customer of UltraEdit reading this who can help on this issue?
