UE no longer tiles with tabbed files open

Postby epack » Fri Jun 07, 2013 7:10 am

I saw this post on the UEStudio board, and am reposting it here as it directly relates to UE as well.

Oh man, this sucks. I'm using the latest version of UE, not the Studio, and it does the same thing. I *love* having tabs, not just in UE but any program that allows more than one file to be open at any time; it makes it exceedingly easy to to see at a glance which file you are working on, especially when you have more than 2 or 3 open, and having to enable and disable viewing the tabs simply to tile is a huge PITA. Heck, now it's not even obvious that you even HAVE more than one window open at any time if you disabled tabs. I know, I know, there's other ways to do that, but it's an extra click or more to do that. Plus I thought maybe I could put Open File Tabs [from the View menu] onto my tool bar to at least make it quickly available, but I don't see that as an option, darn it, unless it has a different name?

Why on earth is this considered to be a "benefit"? I had just "re-upped" my bundle for another year, but I would absolutely NOT have done that had I known how this "feature" would work, and am strongly considering going back to my previous version. Come on, IDM, rethink this one and bring back the tabs AND tiling for multiple windows.

Quick update: I did find the option to show or hide the tabs for the tool bar, but only by looking at each and every option first. Silly me, I'd been looking for "Open File Tabs" or "Tabs" and so on, but it was "Show or Hide Open File Tabs". Helps, but still not good.

Okay, once again. There is the option to use dockable or not dockable (undockable) document windows (file tabs).

With dockable document windows the classic Windows MDI is used which makes it possible to use the classic Windows MDI features like minimizing a document window, position them in any order and any size anywhere, and use the classic Windows MDI commands Tile Horizontal and Tile Vertical which simply do nothing else than resizing and repositioning all not minimized document windows to get them vertically or horizontally arranged within the application's main client area.

As disabling showing the open file tabs for example by clicking on View - Views/Lists - Open File Tabs is possible only with dockable document windows, UltraEdit switches to dockable windows interface without changing the configuration setting for dockable file tabs on disabling the open file tabs bar. That enables the classic Windows MDI commands Tile Horizontal and Tile Vertical.

But also the document interface with undockable document windows supports arranging files side by side vertically or horizontally by simply drag and drop a file tab.

IDM wrote the power tips

After reading those 2 power tips there should be no misunderstanding anymore regarding document window interface.
