UltraEdit is getting very slow

Postby foresthus » Mon Mar 20, 2006 1:28 pm

Hi,

first of all I want to thank Ian for this TOP-Product.

I'm using UltraEdit since version 4.xx and am still using this very cool program, but since version 12 it is getting slower when it starts.

Is there a new code or why is the starting more slowly??? :?: :?:

I can't see a significant difference of starting speed between v11.20b and v12.00. Which version do you have used before?

Also search with the forum search engine for word speed. You will find some topics about which settings can cause slow startup of UltraEdit.

I have the same problem with version 12. It takes, on average, 60-70 seconds for UltraEdit to open fully. It's so bad that I use it only when I have to, which is sad, since I have been using it for many years.

If UE is doing some non-essential scanning (e.g. Registry) or loading of files during startup, then it should have some switch that allows the user to disable or defer it.

60-70 seconds? Something is wrong on your computer. UE v12 must start within 2 seconds depending on your computers performance (CPU, RAM, harddisk, ...). Use free Filemon and Regmon or Process Monitor from SysInternals to find out what is causing this extremly long load time.

If your default printer is a network printer which is not always accessible turn off at Configuration - Editor - Advanced the option Load/Restore printer settings. See help of UE about this setting for details.

I had a similar problem after upgrading a perfectly working 12.0 to 12.10a
UE became slow and started to crash very frequently. So I backed up and deleted all the config files in
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\IDMComp\UltraEdit\
Then manually copy/pasted some parts of the old uedit32.ini to the new one (mainly tools), then configured the rest from the GUI - now it's working fine again.
There is maybe some problem with the old settings & 12.10a, although I haven't compared the config files and have no idea what it may be.

I had the same problem and solved it in the same manner as hveld has described earlier.
I just deleted all FTP releated entries from uedit32.ini since I remembered that UE slowed down after I had created an FTP account. Deleting that FTP account did not help but deleting all FTP releated entries from uedit32.ini was the solution for me.

Hope this helps.

I've been a long time fan of UltraEdit, and was facing the same problem where it would take good > 10 secs to load a simple file. I was about to look for other editors when I realized that it was due to the fact that I have a network printer.

And this solved my problem: Advanced->Configuration

Look for & uncheck option 'Load/restore printer settings' found in Editor->Advanced pane.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Are you SERIOUS????? You REFORMAT your computer because a program is getting a bit slow??? That is like saying, "I noticed I'm starting to get a little bit of dust on the tables in my living room. I think I'll BURN MY HOUSE DOWN and build a new one."

In my experience in PC hardware/software repair, 98% of all problems can be fixed WITHOUT reformatting the computer. Look at support forums, check your settings, track down the problem, but don't NUKE your computer!
