Secure delete file slack and alternate data streams

Postby Phosphor » Sun Jan 16, 2005 11:01 pm

An almost perfect security/privacy tool - my only issue with it is that there is no option to wipe file slack.

...Alternate Data Streams. Some of your competitors' software (East-Tec Eraser, for example) enables users to wipe ADS and File slack, as well as scrambling file names, dates, etc. Would be nice to see this in UltraSentry soon.

Can you please let me know what "File Slack" is, and the other things to which you refer? :?:

Thanks

File slacks and alternate data streams can be securily deleted now with UltraSentry 3.0.

File slack is the name for the area of the unused bytes between end of file data and end of the cluster used only partially by the file. If you have for example a file with 200 bytes, it will nevertheless need a whole cluster of 512, 1024, 2048, ... (depends on the file system used). Help of UltraSentry 3.0 explains file slack and alternate data streams in more detail.
