The
Unicode encoding of a file is shown on status bar left to
DOS/UNIX/MAC.
U- ... file is encoded in UTF-16 Little Endian,
U8- ... file is encoded in UTF-8,
UBE- ... file is encoded in UTF-16 Big Endian,
UESC- ... file is an ASCII Escaped Unicode file.
If there is nothing left to
DOS/UNIX/MAC, the characters of the file are stored with single bytes with value 0 to 255 without any special encoding, in other words it is an ASCII/ANSI file. For more information about the informations on status bar see in help of UltraEdit the page titled
Status Bar or the online help page about the
Status Bar.
The selected code page for a file is not shown as approximately 99% of all UE/UES users use for ASCII/ANSI file the Windows system code page. Therefore displaying an information like
1252 (ANSI - Latin I) as shown after clicking on
View - Set Code Page would be for the majority of UE/UES users just a waste of the limited space on the status bar.
Perhaps you use a large screen with a high resolution, and the UES main window is always maximized, and therefore the prompt area on left side showing real status information and command help is larger than you need. But other users may use UE/UES not with maximized main window on a smaller screen with a lower resolution and therefore would be most likely not happy about an information shown on status bar never changing during their work.
However, in blog
UltraEdit in 2013 IDM announces "
a vastly improved status bar". So it is a very good time to contribute ideas about useful informations and their indications on status bar with an email to IDM support.
