How to stop exclusive lock on files with XP?

Postby exquisitus » Wed Jul 20, 2005 10:43 am

I am using UltraEdit 10.00a. Since I installed Windows XP, UltraEdit opens files in an exclusive mode, i.e. it is not possible to delete an opened file in the windows explorer or to open it with another browser in parallel.
With my previous system, Windows NT, this was no problem. After deletion, UltraEdit recognized this and asked whether to close the shown file or not.
Is there any chance to get back the old behaviour?

Check if option Lock file for write while editing at the general configuration page at end of section File Handling Items is active in UltraEdit. Turn it off.

It was already off!
I made some tests, as a matter of fact there is absolutely no difference in the behaviour if turned on or off. If a file is opened in UE, it will not be possible to delete it in Windows Explorer.
But, I have to correct myself, it looks like it is always possible to open it with another editor in parallel.
Anyway it would be nice to have exactly the 'old' behaviour, where opening a file in UE had absolutely no influence on the way the file was treated in the file system.
Probably this is a XP-specific feature/bug which is not under command of UE?

I don't think, that it is a XP problem, because I use XP and can delete files at every time while editing it with UE. After deleting a file UE automatically informs me about it. That's exactly what you want.

Thanks for the link.
I set "Use of temporary file for editing" to the first entry and now it seems to work as it should.
