Status Bar Line, Column indicator?

Postby espencer756 » Mon Feb 13, 2006 10:38 pm

We have several installations of UE32, most are showing the Line, Column indicator on the status bar. Others are showing only the Column. We can find no way to turn the Line indicator of the status bar on. The only thing we can do is turn on the Display Line Number to the left of the text. We would really like to know how to standardize all of our installations of the software, and we would also like to know why the settings are different in the first place.

On some of your installations the option Disable Line Numbers at Configuration - Editor Display - Miscellaneous is set and this is the reason why you can't see the line number in the status bar.

For synchronization of your settings see the forum article How to transfer configuration settings to a new PC.

Shouldn't this be considered a bug? I know on an older version (10.something I think) I was able to turn off the line numbers but still show the line number in the status bar. I preferred this since I have no reason to need to see the line numbers on the side.

No. this is not a bug. The Display Line Numbers function is an extra feature. I also have turned it off, because the line number in the status bar is enough for me.

The option "Disable Line Numbers" is for editing very large files with thousands of lines. If this option is enabled (default) UltraEdit must during file open count all line endings and hold this info and the info on which line the user currently has the cursor up-to-date while editing and scrolling. On a file with more than 50 MB with 100.000+ lines the feature for line number showing would dramatically slow down editing this file.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying here. You said in your first post in this thread that this option had to be turned on with some installations in order to show the line number in the status bar. Yet you say in this post that you have it turned off because the line number in the status bar is enough for you. The line number in the status bar is enough for me too. If I turn off the Display Line Numbers function though all I get in my status bar is "C0" for the line number. So if this isn't a bug, how can I get it to display the line number in my status bar without enabling the Display Line Numbers option? And since you say that option can drastically slow down larger files, that's even more of a reason for it to be turned off. I still need to be able to see the line number in the status bar though, like I could in previous versions.

Hi Tigga,

Here is the meaning of C0:

Cx = selected clipboard: C0 = windows clipboard, C1 = user clipboard 1, ...

To see the line number, just DO NOT mark the appropriate option in the Miscellaneous dialog.

I think we all agree that we have NO bug here .... ;-)

I have not checked the option Disable Line Numbers in the configuration dialog to see the line number in the status bar. But I have disabled the option Display Line Numbers in the menu View. Don't mix these 2 options.

The option in the configuration dialog disables line counting.

The option in View menu disables/enables the display of the line number left of every line.

The Display Line Numbers option in menu View is not available if the option Disable Line Numbers in the configuration is checked because the line numbers cannot be displayed without line counting. In other words to toggle the visibility of the line numbers bar on left window side is not possible with configuration setting Disable Line Numbers being enabled.

Ahhh, gotcha. I must have been reading too quickly and didn't notice that you guys were referring to two different options. Thanks for the help and the great product. Seems to be working perfectly now. :)

I have version 11.10c+1, I have no line numbers in my status bar, and my View / Display Line Numers is disabled. However, numerous times I have looked closely through all Advanced / Configuration options and find nothing about disabiling or enabling line counts. I have paid particular attention to the Edit tab and the General tab and have not found the necessary option. My version does not have an Editor Display - Miscellaneous section.

Hint: The names of the options have often not changed. Users with a version prior UE v11.20 should first search in the help for the words posted. Normally they will be found in the help and then you know, where the option is.

For UE prior v11.20 look Configuration - tab General - group/section File Handling - entry Disable line number (helps large file handling) at line 10 in the File Handling section.
