Anyone else able to reproduce crash?

Postby OnlineCop » Wed Nov 29, 2006 3:01 am

I have had problems with UltraEdit randomly crashing when I exit the program. I've submitted a bug report to the developers already, but wanted to know if anyone else was seeing this problem.

I usually run UE without any problems. When I try to close the program (either the "X" on the titlebar, File->Exit, or Alt+F4), UE will lock up and will never close. I have to force-close the application.

I have been able to reproduce this enough to send the error report, but they seemed to have never heard of this happening, and I was curious if I'm the only one who gets this (I have reproduced this on 2 additional computers, so know it's not just "me").

It's been happening since about version 11, but I have noticed it even now. I'm using 12.20a+4 (currently, the most-recent version).

I'm including how to reproduce this (at least, on my side):

1) Open UE, and open a new blank file
2) Change the "Highlight As..." (or "View as...") to something like C/C++
3) Type: //hello! (it should highlight as a C/C++ comment)
4) Save the file as TEST.TXT (not .C or .CPP)
5) Close UE

At this point, UE will not close; it freezes. Has anyone else noticed this, or does this happen to anyone else?

Happens to me just about every time I exit. No idea what is causing it. Tried your testcase and it worked fine. Not much of a datapoint other than to say I see the same hang on exit. Running Ultraedit v12.20a+4 on WinXP.

My experience with hanging applications for more than 20 seconds is that in 80% it is caused by a network. Try once to wait up to 5 minutes - use a clock. Does UltraEdit during this 5 minutes exit?

Try also to temporary move all uedit32.* files in the directory of uedit32.ini to a different directory, start UE which creates now a new configuration files with standard settings, make your actions and check if it hangs again. If UltraEdit does not hang again, compare the configuration files for example with UltraCompare (Lite) to find the possible reason. After fixing the INI you can move your uedit32.* files back.

If your default printer is a network printer which is not always accessible turn off at Configuration - Editor - Advanced the option Load/Restore printer settings. See help of UE about this setting for details.

Finally as often written you can use free Filemon and Regmon from SysInternals. These 2 tools always helped me to find the reason of a not normal behaviour of an application.

It's also possible that one of the program files is corrupt. Run first a full ScanDisk on your drives. If the drives have no errors, reinstall UltraEdit again.

And it should be clear that your computers are free from any viruses or trojans and you use an always up-to-date anti-virus program and you have installed all Windows security updates.

This seems to have fixed it. The ini files were too different to make sense of a comparision so the specific culprit remains unknown. Thanks for your help.

I also have this problem (not everytime) when exiting. The symptoms of the crash is the UE window turns white leaving the outermost frame visible (min, max and close buttons still functional). The task manager says "program not responding" and I am forced to kill program. Next time I open UE it recovers the unsaved files but does not reopen the other files I had opened at the time.

The only "heavy activity" I can think of that I had been doing was copy-n-paste. All files were text and none of them would be considered large.

Running 12.20b +1 on XP Pro. Don't recall having this issue with 11.xx versions.

Editing files on local hard disk or FTP files or files on a network drive?

Have you ever waited 2-5 minutes when you think UltraEdit hangs. Maybe only a network problem exists and the network timeouts are very long.

All file activity was on local drive; load/restore printer settings option is turned off.

Thanks

What backup settings are you using? When I turn version backup on this problem starts to happen for me. Works fine when it is off.
