Run UltraSentry as a system service

Why a System Service?

A System Service can be started without the user having to login to the computer. The service also won't 'stop' after the user logs off.

The benefit of running UltraSentry as a service is you can schedule your profiles/cleaning operations and be sure that UltraSentry is running them when you are logged in or not.

If you are a home user, with multiple user accounts that need ocassional maintenance/cleaning; Or a system admin that needs to help ensure the privacy of sensitive data, you can run UltraSentry as a Service to ensure your computing privacy.

What is a Service?

A System Service is a background process which is (often) loaded when the computer is started (booted-up). This occurs before any user logs in, and is (often) independent of specific user(s) being logged on.

Basically, A Service is a background application that runs all the time. It is activated automatically at system bootup, and shut down at system shutdown. The Service provides the system with a way to run background processes independently of who, if anyone, is logged on.

UltraSentry as a Service

For NT-based systems a new scheduler, separate from the UltraSentry application, is implemented as a system service (NT Service). This allows profiles to be executed without a user logging into the system.

This is not supported on systems running Windows 98/Me.

Enabling the System Service Option

Click on the Schedule Profile button on the main toolbar.

To enable the system service functionality click on the "Launch scheduler as a system service".

Run UltraSentry as a System Service

If this option is selected, and the Add Task button is pressed, the title bar of the Schedule Profile dialog will indicate "(Scheduler was launched as a system service)".

Note: You may need to reboot your system for UltraSentry to register itself as a System Service.
