Hard to believe, but with the release of 2025.0, UltraEdit marks its 33rd major version spanning over three decades of development. As always, we have our users to thank first. Your input continues to shape UltraEdit in serving countless industries and use cases.
Speaking of unique applications, one reason I’m excited for our future (beyond the recent plugins and webtools rollout) is our upcoming focus on EDI. Electronic Data Interchange may not be heralded, but it’s everywhere: insurance claims, medical records, logistics, and more. It’s a somewhat rigid, text-heavy format that many modern tools ignore. But that’s where UltraEdit shines – filling real-world gaps that others overlook.
Of course in our world, nothing is a given. Some tools and technologies wane while others arise. It feels strange to type, but with rapid gains in generative AI there is serious debate about whether or not humans will even be coding in ten years. That said, we believe that there will always be space for a handy, tried-and-true text editor to address some of the gaps – like EDI – that more “opinionated” solutions don’t address. And we’ll continue to seek out those gaps and how we can effectively address them.
We’ll also thoughtfully explore how to best incorporate new technologies like AI and LSP, but always in a way that respects what makes UltraEdit, well…UltraEdit. That’s why we make these features configurable, and in many cases optional, because we think you should decide what belongs in your editor.
For our corporate customers, we remain dedicated to publishing the most secure, stable, and enterprise-ready text editor available. And we’ll continue to refine those gap-filling UltraEdit capabilities that set us apart, whether that’s hex editing, integrated SFTP, our industry-best column mode, or unlimited file size support. (You might’ve noticed several quality improvements to these areas in the 2025.0 release notes.)
I’m genuinely excited about where UltraEdit is headed thanks to the thoughtful, focused work our product team is doing. And if you see any other “gaps” we can fill, reach out! We’d love to hear more about your needs or ideas. If not, no worries. We just hope that UltraEdit remains one of your favorite tools no matter how much the world around us changes.
