With AI integrations everywhere, what makes UltraEdit’s new AI-powered plugin different?
We’re excited to introduce our new AI assistant plugin with the release of UltraEdit and UEStudio 2024.2. This marks a major step forward for our “Swiss Army Knife” text editor, adding yet another powerful option to UltraEdit’s robust toolset.
We’re all aware that nearly every app or platform boasts a new AI integration in some fashion. In fact, some of us might be fatigued from the overheralded promises of how the latest AI tool will improve our productivity/efficiency/lives/whatever… So while integrated AI chat in UltraEdit doesn’t seem novel at first blush, it’s our unique partnership with Pieces for Developers that gives us – and you – something to be excited about.
Want to see for yourself what the buzz is all about? Download UltraEdit for Windows and jump in!
Pieces + UltraEdit = AI that’s as deeply integrated as YOU want…or not
Our stance on user workflow has always been one of neutrality: UltraEdit is an “unopinionated” text editor that you can configure and tweak to match your preferences. (We put the “Swiss” in “Swiss Army Knife of text editors!” 😉 ) That’s why we made sure our AI plugin gives you control, just like UltraEdit always has.
Enter our new Pieces plugin: a totally optional and highly tunable AI-backed development assistant and code snippet repository that offers a multitude of LLMs, including some air-gapped local models, as well as optional memory contexts that extend beyond your work in UltraEdit. Pieces works directly in UltraEdit, and you can interact with it just as you would any LLM-powered AI chatbot.
Not only that, the team at Pieces has worked diligently in establishing partnership with leading LLM providers like OpenAI and Google to make their services fully and immediately accessible through Pieces…without requiring a signup, API key, or additional fees for use! Pieces’ philosophy of working out-of-the-box, allowing the user to choose their LLM, and the depth of memory context dovetails perfectly with our approach in not forcing a workflow on our users.
Concerned about privacy? With Pieces, you’re in control. You can switch to a local, offline model anytime – your data stays yours. If your data shouldn’t be accessed by AI services, simply leave the long-term memory context turned off (it is by default). And if you want the benefits of LLMs but don’t want to share your personal details and data with an LLM provider…use Pieces!
We’re excited about Pieces + UltraEdit, because it means:
- You get AI chat integrated directly with your favorite text editor
- You don’t have to create an account or pay extra to use it
- You can switch between any of the best LLMs the market has to offer
- You get a local, air-gapped LLM if privacy is a concern
- You get some other amazing benefits from Pieces including code snippet storage, a pretty nifty web browser extension, and more
So what’s the catch?
That’s what makes this partnership such an amazing win for us and for you – there is no catch. You get unlimited access to Pieces and AI with an existing (current) UltraEdit license, perpetual or subscription.
Still skeptical? If you’ve been avoiding the AI/LLM frenzy because of data or privacy concerns, UltraEdit + Pieces have you covered. No extra cost, no data risk. But don’t take my word for it; experiment on your terms and try it out today!
What’s next for Pieces + UltraEdit
We’re incredibly proud of the AI integration in UltraEdit, but we’re not done yet. We’ll continue working with the awesome folks at Pieces to improve and refine the plugin. And we’ll continue rounding out Pieces’ AI integration with UltraEdit – unobtrusively, of course – with new versions of UltraEdit and UEStudio.
In the future, you’ll be able to load entire UltraEdit projects or actual folders into Pieces for some pretty awesome AI interactions. We’ll also be working on deeper integration between UltraEdit and Pieces, like getting instant file summaries or detailed information when you load files like server logs.
This is just the beginning, and the future is wide open. We’re excited to see how you’ll push the limits of AI with UltraEdit + Pieces!
